A 5 km long toll road leads from Griesenau to an altitude of 1024 m, directly in front of the imposing mountain range of the Wilder Kaiser. In summer – from around the end of March to the end of October, it opens up the bizarre, romantic mountain world to visitors even when arriving by car or bus. With its wildly romantic brooks, well-developed walking paths and rustic alpine huts, the Kaiserbachtal is THE excursion area in the Kitzbühel Alps.
The entire nature reserve in the Northern Limestone Alps offers a unique flora and fauna on 10,200 hectares: over 900 flowering plants, ferns, mosses and lichens, mixed forests with beech, fir, spruce, in higher elevations sycamore, ash and alder, alpine meadows, in the alpine area pines and alpine roses, rare spiders, many different butterflies, fire salamanders, dormice, chamois, numerous species of birds such as alpine choughs, rock swallows, capercaillies, hawks, owls, and one or two golden eagles are also at home here.
- Alpine Outdoor Gallery
- The alpine outdoor gallery is finally in operation and presents various mountain sports greats such as Peter Habeler from the Zillertal at seven stations on the footpath along the Kaiserbach.
- Schnackler adventure trail
- The second area, especially for younger visitors to the Kaiserbachtal, describes the story of the “Schnackler” and the “Koasabacher” at several stations.

The mountain pine distillery Hofmann can also be found in the Kaiserbachtal, which extracts natural, essential and medicinal mountain pine oil from mountain pine branches in a traditional manner. The high-quality oil is used as a bath additive, for soaps, ointments, liniments and sauna infusions and helps with colds, rheumatic complaints and sore muscles.
The Kaiserbachtal is also the starting point for countless summit ascents and demanding climbing tours in the Kaiser Mountains. The ridge hike from Stripsenjoch over the Feldberg is rewarded with wonderful views. The leisurely hike along the wild and romantic Kaiserbach stream in the valley is very scenic.

Kitzbühel resort is a vast skiing area with 170km of groomed slopes and 32km of off-piste routes that connect several villages; the biggest being Jochberg and Kirchberg. Thanks to some pretty fast lifts and a relatively new gondola stretching across a wide valley, it’s easy to ski the different areas in one day and makes for some excellent touring around. The mountain and ski map can be a bit confusing at first – lifts are grouped by letters based on their location. But once you start to find your way around there’s some awesome skiing and boarding to be had. One of the great things about the runs is that there is often an easy and a hard way down, meaning groups of varying abilities don’t have a hard time riding the same lifts together. Most visitors staying in Kitzbühel will catch the Hahnenkamm gondola from town and then continue to travel up to skiing the Pengelstein area. There are some awesome, long, tree-lined runs down to Kirchberg and the smaller villages of Aschau and Skirast while the further away areas of Wurzhöhe, (connected to Pengelstein by the impressive 3S gondola) Bärenbadkogel and Resterhöhe areas are sunny and less crowded. Just make sure you leave enough time to get back across the valley if you’re staying at Kitzbühel. Advanced skiers will find some great steep skiing under the Steinbergkogel and Ehrenbachöhe lifts and plenty of other stashes of powder off-piste (if the conditions are good). There’s endless terrain to keep all levels of intermediates happy, including on the Kitzbüheler Horn side of the mountain. There’s a beginner nursery with free lifts in town at the base of the Hahnenkamm so given it’s so low it’s prone to poor snow conditions. When there’s no snow, beginner lessons are taken up on Kitzbüheler Horn and it has some great intermediate slopes to progress to – the drawback of the Horn being its location away from the main slopes. In summary Kitzbühel is not ideal for beginners. With our central location there is a ring bus that takes you from Snowbunnys Hostel direct to the Lift Stations at the Hahnenkamm or Hornbahn, alternatively it is a 5 minute walk to eitther.
